In addition to isolating natural genes that encode proteins with useful properties, directed or random mutagenesis and selection schemes can be used to create a mutant form of a gene that encodes a protein with the desired properties.
In random mutagenesis, the amino acid changes that will result in the desired properties are unknown.
By using directed or random mutagenesis, proteins with enhanced char acteristics can be created for therapeutic or industrial applications.
The amino acid specificity of the tyrosinetRNA synthetase from M. jannaschii is altered by random mutagenesis of its gene so that, in stead of tyrosine, it catalyzes the addition of OmethylLtyrosine onto the tRNA.
